1) People who have confirmed onward tickets and seats on international flights and directly transit through China and stay for no more than 24 hours within the airport shall not need to apply for a transit visa.
2) Canadian passport holders having valid ticket to third country transiting via Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu international airports within 48 hours shall not need to apply for a transit visa.
If you are transit through China to a third country and stay at the airport for more than 24 hours or leave the airport, transit visa is required. The requirements are:

For Canadian passport holders: Original valid passport (must be valid at least for 6 months from departure date& min. 2 blank pages).

For Non-Canadian applicants: Valid passport and Permanent resident permit/work permit/study permit must be submitted in original

One recent taken color passport photo against white background (48mm*33mm, taken within 6 months); Photo facility is available on-site (Toronto, Markham and Vancouver).Photos from photo booth or home-shot photos are not acceptable.

One completed China visa application form.

Child of Chinese origin applying for the first time: provide birth certificate (long form) and either his or her parents’ Canadian passports or Chinese passport and permanent resident cards that he/ she held when the child was born.
